At first glance the week eight college football slate looks rather thin. There are no ranked matchups and some of the nations best teams are off this weekend. College GameDay is in Los Angeles, CA as UCLA hosts No. 10 Oregon. As if there weren't enough going on in LA this week with the Los Angeles Dodgers facing the Atlanta Braves in the National League Championship Series and the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers tipping off the 75th season of NBA basketball https://www.tvfanprostore.com/Romello_Edwards_Jersey-49. There are a handful of matchups similar to UCLA's with Oregon. Chip Kelly had UCLA ranked early in the season before losses to Fresno State and Arizona State. Although the Bruins have fallen out of the AP Top-25 Poll, UCLA is still a competitive football team that could climb back into the rankings with a win and send conference foe Oregon tumbling at the same time. Iowa State is in the same situation in the Big 12. Losses to Iowa and Baylor sent the Cyclones tumbling out of the AP Top-25 Poll after being ranked in the top-10 to start the season. A showdown with No. 8 Oklahoma State at home could setup the Cyclones to make a run in the Big 12 and climb back into the rankings. With that being said, let's take a look at the Big 12 slate and preview the best games around the nation. No. 8 Oklahoma State Iowa StateOklahoma State just keeps winning. The Cowboys were underdogs on the road last weekend at Texas and pulled out a 32-24 win after a slow start. That brings OSU's record to 6-0 halfway through the season. Iowa State is 4-2 and opened conference play with a 31-29 loss to Baylor on the road. On the bright side for the Cyclones, Baylor has made that loss look better and better as the weeks go on. The Bears only loss this season in currently to Oklahoma State. Iowa State star running back Breece Hall got off to a slow start this season but has turned it around and strung together some impressive performances. Hall went for 197 yards and two touchdowns in the Cyclones 33-20 win over Kansas State last week. Brock Purdy has also improved after a rough start to the season. Purdy passed for 208 yards and a score on 22-of-25 last week. The strength of both of these teams so far has been defense. Iowa State and Oklahoma State are both ranked top-20 in the nation in total defense and OSU has been exceptional at getting off the field on third down Tanner Dobrucky Jersey. This game isn't likely to be a classic Big 12 shootout. Ian and Ingalls are both picking Oklahoma State to remain undefeated but I am going with Iowa State by a field goal. This is a coin flip that could go either way. I'm picking Iowa State because it is the home team and because it needs a win to remain in contention for the Big 12 Championship Game. A loss would all but eliminate the Cyclones.No. 3 Oklahoma Kansas Oklahoma looks like a completely different team under freshman quarterback Caleb Williams. The Sooners once again appear to be the favorite to win the Big 12 Championship Game and advance to the College Football Playoff. Kansas State is 0-3 in Big 12 play but has faced Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and Iowa State so far. Those are three of the top four teams in the Big 12. The Wildcats desperately need a win against a Texas Tech squad that is 2-2 in conference play with wins over two squads that are 0-3 in Big 12 play thus far in West Virginia and Kansas. Texas Tech scores more points than Kansas State, but also gives up a lot more points than Kansas State does. Sounds about right. The Red Raiders are coming off of a big win over Kansas last weekend while Kansas State lost to Iowa State 33-20. Texas Tech's passing attack has really struggled over the last few weeks. The Texas Tech defense was gashed in Big 12 losses to Texas and TCU. The Red Raiders face a more competent opponent this weekend and will need the passing attack to be better than it has been over the last three weeks. Kansas State's offense hasn't been particularly impressive. The Wildcats managed 20 points against Iowa State and Oklahoma State and scored 31 points against Oklahoma. The Cyclones and Cowboys might have the best two defenses in the Big 12, but Kansas State will need to score closer to 31 points than 20 points in order to beat Texas Tech.Our staff has Kansas State notching its first win in Big 12 play this season and covering a rather slim spread. I picked the Wildcats to beat Texas Tech 33-28 and I expect this one to be a one score game. Kickoff is set for Saturday morning at 11 on FS1.West Virginia TCUWest Virginia and TCU will square off in "The Carter" on Saturday night. West Virginia is still searching for its first Big 12 win of the year while TCU looks to improve on its 1-2 record in Big 12 play. The West Virginia offense has really struggled in Big 12 play, finishing with 20 points against Texas Tech and Baylor and 13 points against Oklahoma. TCU has had a much more successful start to conference play than West Virginia has, even is the difference has only been one win. The Horned Frogs scored 52 points in a win over Texas Tech and played Texas close at home. TCU lost to Oklahoma 52-31 on the road last weekend without star running back Zach Evans. The Horned Frogs offense still looked good for the most part, but the defense couldn't slow down Caleb Williams.Regardless of if Evans plays or not, TCU should have no problem hanging points on West Virginia https://www.tvfanprostore.com/Princeton_Fant_Jersey-46. The Mountaineers will need to score more than 20 points in order to win this one. Aside from a 66-0 win over Long Island, West Virginia's season high for points scored is 27 in a win over Virginia Tech. 27 points is the least amount of points TCU has scored in a game this season.I have TCU winning over West Virginia with relative ease. Ingalls and Ian agree with me in that TCU will win, though Ingalls did pick West Virginia to cover a four point spread.Games Around the NationAs I mentioned above, the slate of games across the nation is rather thin this weekend. Of course, we could get a bunch of upsets and great games, but the slate isn't inspiring at first glance. The UCLA- Oregon game is intriguing and Oregon is on potential upset watch. No. 12 Ole Miss hosts LSU as coach Ed Orgeron appears in his first game since being ousted as LSU's coach. No. 4 Alabama hosts a Tennessee squad that looks to be much improved from year's past. No. 24 UTSA plays at Louisiana Tech in its first game as a ranked team in school history. No. 13 Notre Dame and USC renew a century old rivalry in South Bend on Saturday night. OU should be awake for this and got a world-class tutorial last week from Arkansas on how to handle old rivals you haven't seen in a while. I'm laying the points and taking the under, but I'm using a Corso GIF so that could spell doom for OU... The Mountaineers get a shot at demonstrating they have a functional Power 5 offense against a pretty functional Power 5 defense. Fortunately for them the Hokie's offense isn't much more dynamic, so this has a chance to be a real barnburner. Line says it's essentially a toss-up and I think that overunder is still too high. I'm taking VT for the outright win and sticking with the under Kevin Mair Jersey. Nevada at Kansas StateNevada -2.0OU 50.5This whole thing stinks to high heaven. Baylor and Kansas kicked off Big 12 last weekend in Lawrence and this weekend brings a much larger slate of Big 12 games. TCU and Kansas will take on non-conference opponents this weekend while the rest of the Big 12 plays conference opponents. TCU and SMU will battle for the Iron Skillet for the 100th time and Kansas will face an ACC bottom-dweller in Duke. Let's preview the football weekend in the Big 12 and hit on some of the best games around the nation! No. 25 Kansas State Oklahoma StateKansas State and Oklahoma State both come into this game with 3-0 records and Kansas State is ranked. The game will be televised on ESPN+. If you aren't sure why that's the case, let's recap the six games played between these two teams so far this season. Kansas State opened with an impressive win over Stanford before a poor performance against Southern Illinois in which quarterback Skylar Thompson suffered an injury Cole Hussung Jersey. The Wildcats rebounded last week with a 38-17 win over Nevada. Oklahoma State only beat FCS opponent Missouri State by a touchdown to open the season before a five point win over Tulsa and a 21-20 victory at Boise State last week. Both teams improved last week but neither did enough to inspire much confidence. Oklahoma State is favored by nearly a touchdown despite three shaky offensive performances so far this season. A suffocating defense playing in front of a home crowd and facing a backup quarterback is a big reason why. There may not be a lot of points scored in this one, and OSU fans can only hope for a better offensive attack this week. I am picking Oklahoma State to beat Kansas State 31-17. The Cowboys scored 21 points in the first half last week before being shutout in the second half. I am betting on OSU to repeat the first half production while giving the home fans something to cheer about in the second half this week. Ian and Ingalls both picked OSU to win 21-17 and Phillip and Robert both went with K-State to win the game.SMU TCUSMU and TCU face off in the 100th Iron Skillet game on Saturday morning at 11 on FS1. There has been plenty of talk between the two schools leading up to the game and I can't wait to watch this battle between Dallas and Fort Worth. TCU hasn't played since beating Cal by two points two weeks ago. That came after a big win over Duquesne in week one. SMU is 3-0 with big wins over Abilene Christian and North Texas, and a walk-off win over Louisiana Tech on a miracle touchdown pass from Tanner Mordecai to Reggie Roberson Jr.Steve Lansdale asked Tanner Mordecai about what he heard from his teammates after the Hail Mary. I am taking Duke to win 31-21 but Kansas to cover the 17 point spread. The rest of the staff is also picking Duke to win this game. West Virginia No. 4 OklahomaOur last Big 12 game of the weekend is the Saturday night primetime game on ABC. West Virginia will take on Oklahoma in Norman as the headlining night game. That is, unless you are interested in watching Tennessee get run out of Gainesville by Florida. West Virginia has some momentum, coming off a big win over rival Virginia Tech. The Mountaineers made a goal line stand to take down the Hokies 27-21 to win the Black Diamond Trophy. Jarret Doege had a good afternoon, passing for 193 yards and two scores. He did have one costly interception that set up Virginia Tech deep in West Virginia territory with the game winding down. As I mentioned above, the Mountaineer defense bailed him out. Leddie Brown averaged 8.5 yards-per-carry, going for 161 yards and a score. Oklahoma hasn't played up to its standards so far this season. That's the main reason for intrigue in this game. OU struggled against Tulane to open the season and only beat Nebraska 23-16 at home a week ago. Spencer Rattler is playing well, yet, it doesn't feel like he is playing anywhere near his potential. Maybe I am just used to those OU offenses under Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray that averaged over eight yards-per-play. Zach Calzada looked much better last week against New Mexico. This should be a close game, though I would pick Texas AM by a larger margin if King were playing. UTSA has been one of the best surprises of the year so far, though if you have followed the program the last few years the Road Runners 3-0 start might not be that big of a surprise. UTSA takes on Memphis on the road, and the Tigers are off to a 3-0 start with a win over Mississippi State behind freshman quarterback Seth Henigan.
